Astragalus is a perennial plant about 16 to 36 inches tall. It is native to the northern and eastern parts of China, as well as Mongolia and Korea. It has hairy stems with leaves made up of 12 to 18 pairs of leaves. The root is the medicinal part of the plant, and is usually harvested when the plant is 4 years old.

In Vedic astrology, Astragalus is known as Guru. It opens the heart, brings goodness and protection, helps us expand our consciousness to receive prosperity and also expands our outlook toward success and wisdom.
Astragalus was used in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Persian medicine for thousands of years. The recorded history of the plant Astragalus dates back at least to the 1st century C.E.. The genus was well known to Western European botanists of the 17th century.
